The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Johnny Mathis

This is from the 1972 album of the same title. I read about the song and if the story is true, it makes it even more romantic. I read that it was written by a Scottish man named, Ewan MacColl for his wife and then, recorded about 10 years later. What a lovely man to see that beauty in his wife. What a perfect rendition by Johnny Mathis. No one else could bring this much soul into any song.

    Both Ewan MacColl’s …
Both Ewan MacColl’s parents were Scottish therefore he was – just because you are born in a stable doesn’t make you a horse! Yes he changed his name – to a pen name which expressed his commitment to Scots folk music and the Lallans Scots tongue of which he was a great exponent. Even his songs were influenced by the Celtic musical style and ballads of which he was so fond – this song being an example – see Barbara Dickson’s rendition on youtube. The name Miller is not only to be found in England!

the first and only time I ever heard this song was by Roberta Flack. Johnny’s version is quite impressive. Never knew the story behind it. In fact, I thought this was a “Roberta Flack original.”
