Look at the Layers …
Look at the Layers Panel. The top layer has 2 thumbnails, the left one is the adjustment, the right one is the mask. The white areas of the mask reveal the adjustment. If you click on the thumbnail of the mask, when you paint with black in the image window it conceals the adjustment. Nothing should be red, that sounds like you hit “Q” which toggles quick mask, just hit Q again to toggle off.

okay…so i figured …
okay…so i figured out the regular brush thing…now i’m unsure about the MASK thumbnail? When I click what i want to be in color, it just fills everything i click in as red.

Because of limited …
Because of limited time, I don’t re-watch the vids and answered regarding the History Brush, in general– but this video does not use the history brush, so that’s the problem! Select the regular brush tool NOT the History Brush. Be sure to click on the MASK thumbnail adjoined to the layer before using the tool.

i’m having the same …
i’m having the same problem that ashtonlook was having…i tried holding the alt button while pressing the snapshot button but still no luck. it just still shows a circle with a line going through it where my pointer is. mine is now saying, “could not use the history brush because no layers are selected”.

Try alt/option …
Try alt/option clicking on the snapshot icon at the bottom of the HISTORY PALETTE. Then try the History Brush.
