My name is Merve, I am a Muslim, an engineer from New York, a mom, a wife and a crafter by nature. My parents introduced me to arts and crafts at a very early age. I love doing arts and crafts as a hobby but most importantly to teach my son about nature and manual skills. My parents and I traveled quite a lot, thus I was able to pick up different cultures and languages easily. My parents introduced me to arts and crafts at a very early age. .
As a child I watched many Japanese shows. These shows influenced my taste, my skills and even my choice in profession. One of these arts and crafts shows that influenced me was called ¿Can I do it? Or in Japanese, Dekirukana? (できるかな). (Their protagonists were Noppo (ノッポさん Noppo-san), played by Ei Takami, and Gonta (ゴン太くん Gonta-kun). I only watched the show from age 4-5 but it did leave quite an impression in my life as well as in the life of many other children.

What are good/great tips for using GIMP for coloring my pictures that I draw?
I have GIMP, which is like photo shop, but free, and I need some tips to using it effectively to outline and color my pictures that I draw. This would be so helpful. I’m not very fluid on how to used layers, but I do experiment. Please help!!!
i have GIMP too, and i’ve been using it for at least a year now, and i’m lovin it =) i would first start getting used to where everything is (tools, opacity, layers, etc.) and actually try creating simple things with your mouse. If you are getting more serious about it, i suggest you buy a drawing tablet (which makes is SOOO much easier) i have the Wacom Bamboo tablet (which is approx $60 for a basic one) it’s quite handy and is sensitive/touch pressure.

as for layers, i recommend that always use transparent well because.. you don’t want to cover ur beautiful artwork with a blank layer, right ^^? so i suggest u use them often, and become familiarized the the quick tools (like pressing certain keys) you can always go to youtube and find some tutorials and i’m sure there are lots of vids =)
when you try to color ur artwork, always start with the overall color, and THEN you can add the 3D effects etc. i strongly recommend that you see examples such as: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo1R2ESEtDo&feature=fvsr
she isn’t using GIMP, but i’ve used that program and its quite similar
and a good tip is DON’T OVERREACT ON WHAT YOU DRAW!!! i’m such a perfectionist and and takes up so much of my time when i attempt to complete something. just draw ur basic overview and THEN fix whatever to ur liking =)
i hope this helped

Do You Have Craft Ideas Besides Coloring Pages?
A reader from Facebook asks for craft ideas that don’t include coloring sheets. I try to give some example activities that work well for kids and don’t require too many fine motor skills.

do you have Valentines Day Coloring pictures?
go to y our local $ store or thrift store and find a child’s valentine coloring book. or look in your library for a craft book and photocopy the valentine crafts from it.
can coloring pictures in a coloring book be consider art?
While I appreciate "Mike’s" answer, I have to disagree. It is as much an art as is decoupage, fastening gems onto clothing, applying faux finishes on walls and furniture, pinstripes on automobiles and stenciling images onto ceilings and walls.
I would classify it as a form of decorative art, like many crafts are.
Certainly, in the selection and application of colors onto a pre printed image, one can exercise one’s creativity in many ways, from unique colors to being able to color "outside the lines" and get away with it.
Remember, the definition of art is NOT the monetary value one might place on it, but in the exercise of creativity. Who do you suppose shows more pride: The millionaire who puts a valuable oil painting up in his den, or the parent that displays his child’s coloring page on the refrigerator door?
